How to Recover from a Burnout

Hi Everyone – I want to talk about how to recover from a burnout. What fueled this post is that I’ve had a lot of clients come to me that are experiencing what I’d call burnout. I don’t know when it became the in thing to keep going until your engine refuses, but I’m here to say that is bullshit! It doesn’t have to be that way!

What Burnout Is:

According to Psychology Today: Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to:

  • physical and emotional exhaustion
  • cynicism and detachment
  • feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment

Burnout is not something that happens instantly. It’s going through the constant grind of life, work, marriage and family. Eventually you forget about yourself. All of this results in complete mental, emotional, physical and spiritual exhaustion. You just can’t go anymore and even if you could, you don’t want to.

Why Is Burnout So Popular?

We live in such a fast-paced age that expects you to do everything, attend to everyone and have everything all together in one day, every single day, all the time.

If we aren’t busy, then we aren’t “productive enough” and we aren’t doing enough to get by. Essentially we are busying as I say. I’d go as far as to say that sometimes we don’t know what we are busy with but because everyone else is busy, we don’t want to be left behind.

I wouldn’t say it’s popular. I would say that it SEEMS like it’s popular because everyone else is doing it. This has become the norm now. It’s just what we do.

I think women are more prone to burnout because we think that we can achieve everything and be there for everyone right? We are meant to be everything and then some more: the successful career woman, the mother who has a handle on the kids but cooks and cleans too, the always there friend, the attentive wife.

Burnout Signs:

How do you know you’ve reached burnout? These are the signs I’ve seen in my clients (and experienced myself at times):

  • Don’t remember when last you spent time on yourself FOR yourself. You don’t even know what you like doing with and for yourself.
  • You feel forgetful because you remember nothing other than your to-do list and what you haven’t done on that list.
  • A lack of good, restful sleep. If you’re not asleep, you’re thinking about things you haven’t done and/or you don’t even know what you’re thinking about. Even after sleeping for a decent amount of hours, you still feel restless and tired.
  • You feel anxious, often about things you’re not doing or haven’t done enough of.
  • You don’t feel excited about waking up and going to work or doing things. This can extend to all areas of your life. You don’t feel excited or motivated anymore.
  • Negativity, especially negative self-talk. You belittle yourself and what you do. This can be knowing that you did your best and EVERYTHING possible, but it doesn’t feel good enough OR enough.
  • Overwhelmed because you’re not getting around to everything on your to-do list which just seems to be growing.
  • You’re on edge and sometimes the tiniest of things can set you off and you’re in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

How to Recover from a Burnout

What I Have to Say:

I think that being busy ALL THE TIME is bullshit. We can’t keep running and chasing just for the sake of it. We lose touch of the Self this way.

If you don’t check in with yourself periodically, you won’t know where you are stuck. Sometimes it’s just that you have lost sight of your goals and haven’t upgraded them to where you are in life right now. Sometimes it’s just neglecting to spend time with yourself, your friends and/or family. It doesn’t have to be big life-changing aspects or traumas like not nurturing your inner-child.

You are enough.

You are worthy of taking time out to spend it on yourself doing something you enjoy.

You are worthy of taking time out to discover what those things may be if you can’t remember or don’t know.

You are allowed to say no at times. In fact, it’s your duty to do so at times, because:

  • Everything doesn’t need to be done in ONE day or by you.
  • If you feel you cannot do something because you don’t have the time or capacity, you don’t need to take it on at all or immediately.
  • Someone who continually leans on you to do their job, can be told to do their own job. Some things are not your responsibility.

I promise that you truly are a super woman whether you do everything or only that which you can manage.
